HEADLINE: VIETNAM ENHANCES MEKONG SUBREGIONAL TRANSPORT COOPERATION
DATELINE: HANOI, Aug 23

Vietnam has actively participated in projects of the Greater Mekong
Subregion (GMS), a Vietnamese Transport Ministry official said at a
subregional transport forum.
Deputy Transport Minister Pham The Minh, at the Seventh Meeting of the
Subregional Transport Forum (STF-7) held in Ho Chi Minh City on August
20-21, said that projects on the trans-Asia highway linking Ho Chi
Minh City, Vietnam, to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and the East-West
corridor linking Vietnam's Da Nang to Thailand's Mukdahan via Laos's
Savannakhet province are being carried out. Khalid Rahman, an Asian
Development Bank representative, said that the ADB has decided to
grant US$60 million to a project on building a road linking Kunming,
China, to Hanoi and Hai Phong, Vietnam, in 2003.
He added that ADB will consider funding another US$60 million for
construction of a road running from Ca Mau and Kien Giang provinces of
Vietnam along the Cambodian coastline to Trat province of Thailand in
2006.
The forum drew officials from China, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand
and Vietnam, and representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, the Japan
Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the Japan International
Cooperation Agency (JICA), the International Policy Research Institute
of the Republic of Korea, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia
and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the World Bank.
