CHINA, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand have reached an agreement that they
will transport refined oil on the Lancang-Mekong River, China News
Service reported today.
Deputies of the four countries' governments said that by the end of
June, China will have a mapped course to ensure a safe transport, and
the four countries will jointly set a universal rate to avoid repeat
charges. The opening of the new course via Lancang-Mekong River will
decrease China's transport cost of refined oil.
The four counties have made preparations to renovate three banks that
hinder the shipment line and a dangerous shoal on Mekong River.
Lancang-Mekong River is the most important river in Southeast Asia. It
is the only international watercourse running through six Asian
countries, originating in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, running 4,880 km,
through Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam.
China began international cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong area from
the last century, including its tourism and ore transport, fruit and
everyday use products.
