Chinese government has provided more than 8m US dollars in grant to
Cambodia for conducting technical survey on a new railway from Kompong
Speu Province to Vietnam border of Loc Ninh Province.

An agreement on the grant aid was signed in Phnom Penh on 5 December by HE
[His Excellency] Uk Chan, secretary of state at the Ministry of Public
Works and Transport, and Mr Sun Weiren, economy and trade adviser to
Chinese embassy in Cambodia.

The new railway with a total length of 255 km and a width of one metre
starts at Bad Dang railway station in Udong district, Kompong Speu
Province, goes through Kompong Chhnang and reaches Vietnam border in Memut
district, Kompong Cham Province.

In the signing ceremony, HE Sun Chan Thol, minister of public works and
transport, said the construction of the railway project is very important
for transportation service between China and Cambodia.

When the survey is completed, Cambodia will seek an additional fund for
constructing the railway.

Cambodia now has two railway lines, the first one linking from Phnom to
Poi Pet in Banteay Meanchey Province with a length of 385 km and the
second one linking from Phnom Penh to sea port of Sihanoukville with 265
km long.
