Lancang-Mekong Waterway, a channel for oil transportation
People's Daily. 14 May 2005.

An investigation group consisting of officials from transportation
departments and experts of water-transportation and environment protection
of China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, the six countries
along the Lancang - Mekong Rivers wound up an overall investigation on the
oil-shipping along the Yangtze River the other day. And they've reached a
consensus in regard of the shipping of the finished oil-products along the
Lancang - Mekong Rivers and signed an investigation summary on the matter.

The investigation group of the six countries is of opinion that the
successful experience for the shipping of the end oil-products along the
Yangtze River is worthwhile to draw from. The condition for water
transportation along the Lancang - Mekong Rivers is similar to that along
the Yangtze River and so it is workable to conduct the end oil products
shipping along the Lancang - Mekong watercourse.

The conclusion reached by the investigation group of the six countries has
already been initially proved. In 2004, the Coordination Commission of
China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand for Navigation of Commercial Ships along
the Lancang - Mekong Rivers came to an agreement that the open water-channel
along the Lancang-Mekong Rivers be used to ship the finished oil-product and
liquefied gas from Thailand to Jinghong in Yunnan, China. Since then,
enterprises in Yunnan made efforts to build a special oil-tanker for the
shipping and so far, around 1400 tons of diesel-engine oil have already been
carried from Thailand to Jinghong Yunnan along the watercourse.
