HEADLINE: INFRASTRUCTURE: VIETNAM TO FOCUS ON RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT IN
CENTRAL REGION
BODY:
Vietnam's Ministry of Transport has said it will spend huge sums on
developing the railway system in the central region of the country.
An official of the ministry told local media on March 9 that the ministry
would inject a total of VND1,000 billion ($ 63.5 million) into the railway
system in Danang between now and 2010, aiming to turn the coastal city
into a center of trade, tourism and service of Vietnam.
The ministry would replace the current Danang station in the inner-city
area by a new one costing VND500 billion (31.7 million) and upgrade 40-km
railway section in the city with the remaining capital, said Vu Xuan Hong,
head of the ministry's Vietnam Railway Department.
Hong also revealed that the ministry would seek funds to build a railway
route from Danang to the Central Highlands. This project, aimed to promote
the trade flow between central and central highlands provinces, requires
an investment of VND1,200 billion ($ 68.2 million), in the period of
2011-2015.
In addition, a new railway route between Hue and Danang will also be built
at the end of the decade at a cost of VND5,000 billion ($ 317.3 million),
he said.
The railway sector in Vietnam transported a total of 2.13 million
passengers and more than 1.27 million tons of goods in the first two
months of this year, up 10.6% and down 0.5% on-year, respectively,
according to the government's official statistics.
