Mekong to draw flow of two-way tourists
The Nation. Published on Mar 2, 2004

New tourist routes from Chiang Rai to southern China are opening up
since Thailand and China agreed to promote the Mekong River as a new
regional tourist destination.

A new river cruise, beginning in June when the river level is high,
will take two days to make the trip from Chiang Mai to China's Chiang
Mung.

Tanyapa Nicrothanon , the director of the Tourism Authority of
Thailand's northern office, said that Chiang Rai is a logical gateway
to destinations in both China and Burma.

She added that Thailand and China were holding discussions to
facilitate Chinese tourism to northern Thailand.

Visitors from China to the Kingdom currently require a visa.

The TAT hopes that the number of tourists arriving in Chiang Rai will
increase 10 per cent this year.

Last year Chiang Rai had 1.1 million tourists, who spent Bt8.8
billion.
