(Source: China Transport Daily. February 19, 2004)
During February 16-18 period, 11 water transport experts from Thailand
visited Yunnan, conducting a field trip in Lancang river. They inspected the
water transport infrastructure, logistics, cargo transportation, navigation
safety and ship building industries.

In January 2004, a navigation improvement project, that costs 93.59 million
yuan, was conducted between Jinghong port and the China-Myanmar border No.
243. It will be completed after three dry seasons.

The Thailand National Bureau of Surveying and Engineering (correct me if I
am wrong) said the visit is to promote Sino-Thai friendship and inspect
various aspects of water transport in Lancang-Mekong river. Thai gov't
planned to build a new port in Chiang Saen so as to meet the rapidly
increasingly demand of Lancang-Mekong cross-border navigation, especially
cargo transport and tourism.

The delegation also inspected the highways, railway, Lancang dams and port
facilities. Between February 17 and 18, they also inspected Simao port,
Jinghong port, Guanlei port and 158 km-section of downstream Lancang river.

The vice-director of the Yunnan office of Transportation, Wu Zi-run, also
mentioned that the Sinar Mas Group from Indonesia (who owned the Asia Pulp
and Paper) signed a contract in Simao, to build a pulp and paper plant, with
an annual production of 2 million tons of paper and 3 million tons of pulp.
They plan to transport the paper products via the Lancang-Mekong river.
