Don Kho Village

Don Kho village is located on an island in the Mekong mainstream. Fishing is more significant as a source of livelihood here than in the other three villages, but Don Kho villagers nevertheless see themselves as primarily rice farmers. Fishing here is almost exclusively based around the Mekong River itself. Fish catches are more oriented to sale for cash income, but fish also provide an important component of local diet.

Dimensions of indigenous fisheries

Indigenous fisheries can be seen as a livelihood system consisting of multiple dimensions. Different villages depend on different water sources at different times of the year for fishing; the uses for fish vary within and between villages, and from one season to another; the sources of fish for consumption varies from one season to another; as does the consumption of fish.
