Scales of Water Management in Yunnan and the wider Lancang-Mekong River Basin

In March 2001, AMRC placed Associate and PhD graduate Xiu Juan Liu with the Asian International Rivers Centre to carry out exploratory research documenting formal and informal institutional aspects of water management in Yunnan Province, China. It considers basin-specific, national and international aspects of water use, and management in the context of major plans that China has for energy development and other engineering works on the Lancang. The project is indirectly funded by Greengrants for a one year period. This marks the beginning of AMRC's collaboration with AIRC and its work in Yunnan. Discussions are underway with AIRC to develop a larger multi-scale study of emerging water conflict that will integrate with AMRC's work in the Lower Mekong River Basin. This work has also extended to cooperation with Oxfam in looking at social and environmental effects of the Manwan Dam.

Duration: 2001- 2002
