Indigenous Fisheries Development and Management in Lao PDR

The first phase of this collaborative research project between the AMRC and the Department of Livestock and Fisheries in Lao PDR, supported by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), finished at the beginning of 1999. The research involved participatory documentation of social, economic and biological aspects of the fisheries and fisheries management in different aqua-ecosystems in Champassak province. A workshop was held in Pakse to present and discuss findings. The workshop involved project participants from village, district and province level, from other districts in Champassak Province, from other provinces in southern Laos, and from nine fisheries projects throughout Laos.

Work from IFDMP has then fed into in a second stage, Small Scale Wetland Indigenous Fisheries Management Project.

Duration: February 1997 - January 1999

Partners: Champassak Provincial Livestock and Fisheries Office (Lao PDR)

Funding bodies: Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR); International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
