  Oxfam Community Aid Abroad
Oxfam Community Aid Abroad is an independent, democratic, community-based Australian organisation.Site includes a Mekong section with eleven fact sheets on topics such as hydrodevelopment and the involvement of the Asian Development Bank in the region.
  Bank Information Center

The Bank Information Center (BIC) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that provides information and strategic support to NGOs and social movements throughout the world on the projects, policies and practices of the World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). BIC advocates for greater transparency, accountability and citizen participation at the MDBs.

  Asian Development Bank The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is a Multilateral Development Bank which, in part, focuses on the development of the Mekong Basin. Their website offers a perspective on the current development agendas of the bank as well as descriptions of ADB projects in the Asia and the Mekong.
  Rivers Watch East and SE Asia (RWESA) This network was launched in July 2000 in response to a meeting on dams and other river development projects in the Mekong held near the contentious Pak Mun Dam in Thailand. RWESA is based in Bangkok and aims to protect the health of river ecosystems and their ability to sustain biodiversity and the livelihoods of communities.
  Focus on the Global South



Focus is a program of progressive development policy research and practice, dedicated to regional and global policy analysis, micr-macro linking and advocacy work. Focus' website provides information on Focus' programs and policy/discussion papers, as well as partner organisations.




Japan-ESCAP Cooperation Fund (JECP) JECP is a cooperative intitiative between ESCAP and the Japanese government formed in 1977.  The purpose of JECP is to increase technical expertise in Asia.  JECP is involved in the development of tourism in the Mekong Basin





Probe




Probe International educates Canadians about the environmental, social, and economic effects of Canada's aid and trade abroad.  Probe's Mekong Program website provides an overview of infrastructure plans for the Mekong Region.   The site contains media articles and background briefings, reports and links to other programs.





International Rivers (IR)



IR campaigns on river and dam issues around the world, particularly focusing on the social and environmental effects of water resources infrastructure. The IRN Mekong Program website provides electronic information services on their Mekong campaign (particularly focusing on Laos) transcripts of press releases, correspondence, as well as summaries of reports and media articles.



Nautilus


A policy-oriented research and consulting organization focusing on emerging environmental, energy and security issues, primarily in the Asia-Pacific region. Nautilus' website hosts a digital library of key papers on Mekong and water resources development issues, as well as links to relevant sites.







Towards Ecological Recovery and Regional Alliance (TERRA)





TERRA was established to focus on issues concerning the natural environment and local communities within the Mekong region, and works to support the network of NGOs and people's organisations in Burma, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam, encouraging exchange and alliance-building. TERRA's site contains backcopies of their publications Watershed and New Frontiers. Watershed provides critical analysis of Mekong development issues, and New Frontiers provides summary information of tourism, environment and development issues.

  MekongInfo

MekongInfo is an interactive system for sharing information and knowledge about participatory natural resource management (NRM) in the Lower Mekong Basin. In addition to over 2,000 documents (full-text and abstract) in the Library, MekongInfo provides: a Contacts database of individuals, projects and organisations, news and Announcements of events, relevant Web Links, a Gallery of useful resource materials, a Forum for online discussions, and a free Web hosting service.

  AID/WATCH AID/WATCH is a community-based, not for profit, activist group that campaigns on Australian involvement in overseas aid and development projects, programs and policies.
  Global Association for People and the Environment (GAPE) GAPE is an international NGO whose purpose is capacity-building, community development, environmental conservation and people-centred learning. It has projects in Laos.
  Oxfam Mekong Initiative The Oxfam Mekong Initiative is a joint effort of the seven Oxfams working in the six riparian states of the Mekong River. Together with its partners, Oxfam is working to promote the interests of the poor throughout the Mekong Region during a time of extensive and rapid development, which is complex in nature and often includes difficult trans-boundary issues.
  Protected Areas Review

A critical review of protected areas and their role in the socio-economic development of the four countries of the lower Mekong River region. Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam have been rapidly expanding their protected area networks, yet their natural resources are still degrading. This timely review examines approaches for integrating protected area management with socio-economic planning for the sustainable development of the region's natural resources.

  Mekong River Commission (MRC) The Mekong River Commission was established on 5 April 1995 by the "Agreement on the Cooperation for the Substainable Development of the Mekong River Basin". The MRC member countries are Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. MRC maintains regular dialogue with the two upper states of the Mekong River Basin, China and Myanmar. The MRC member countries agree to co-operate in all fields of sustainable development, utilisation, management and conservation of the water and related resources of the Mekong River Basin, such as navigation, flood control, fisheries, agriculture, hydropower and environmental protection.
  The Water Page The Water Page is an independent initiative dedicated to the promotion of sustainable water resources management and use. A particular emphasis is placed on the development, utilisation and protection of water in Africa and other developing regions.
  Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University The group researches environmental reform processes from local up to global contexts and offers courses and thesis supervision to BSc, MSc and PhD students at Wageningen University and abroad.
  Living River Siam (formerly South East Asia Rivers Network - SEARIN) Living River Siam was established in March, 1999. According to its mission statement: “SEARIN Thailand is a campaign-based organization, working to support local community rights to their rivers, and to oppose threats to rivers and riverine ecosystems in mainland south-east Asia, such as large dams and water diversion projects.”

  Electrical Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Thailand's Electical Generating Authority, involved in energy procurement, energy import, infrastrucutre development and investment.
  Royal Forestry Department of Thailand Text in English and Thai, includes research reports covering issues such as environmental impacts of shifting cultivation and sedimenation on Thai forestry.

  Phnom Penh Post Quality weekly English-language Cambodian newspaper.
  Cambodian Information Centre General information about Cambodia with links to Cambodian-related sites.
  NGO Forum on Cambodia The NGO Forum on Cambodia is made up of non-government organisations grounded in their experience of humanitarian and development assistance to Cambodia. The Forum exists to advocate on issues of concern to the Cambodian people. It is a partnership of local and international NGOs.
  Global Witness Global Witness focuses on areas where profits from environmental exploitation fund human rights abuses. Information obtained through research and field investigations is used to brief governments, inter-governmental organisations, NGOs and the media, in order to achieve positive change. Global Witness has no political affiliation. Global Witness has conducted considerable research on logging in Cambodia and connections with the Khmer Rouge, corruption and illegal exports through neighbouring countries.

Viet Nam Science, Technology and Environment Page



This site is the most comprehensive site on Vietnam-related internet resources.  The site is maintained by the Australia Viet Nam Science-Technology Link and is responsible for the Virtual Library for Vietnam, covering a great variety of topics: news, web sites, maps, geography, culture, history, economics, government, businsess, law, science, technology, and environment.
  Viet Nam Law Documents This site provides copies (in Vietnamese and English) of key Vietnamese laws and decrees in the areas of environment, investment, foreign affairs, agriculture and minerals.

  Thai Yunnan Project The Thai Yunnan Project was established in 1987 within the Dept of Anthropology, Australian National University. The project carries out research, organises seminars and produces publications. PDF files of the newsletter are available through the site.
  Forestry and Society Network Forestry and Society Network was established in 1992 as a nationwide community forestry network, funded by the Ford Foundation and implemented by the Chinese Academy of Forestry.

  The Burma Project The Burma Project, established in 1994, is dedicated to increasing international awareness of conditions in Burma and to helping the country make the transition from a closed to an open society.
  Myanmar Times Weekly international news journal.
  The Peace Way Foundation The Peaceway Foundation was formed in February 2002. It is a private, non-profit organisation devoted to a peaceful resolution to Burma’s struggle for human rights and democratic rule. It operates as an umbrella organisation, under which is a project called Burma Issues which has operated since 1990.
  Online Burma Library The Online Burma/Myanmar Library is a database which functions as an annotated, classified and hyperlinked index to full texts of individual Burma documents on the Internet. It also houses a growing collection of articles, conference papers, theses, books, reports, archives and directories on-site.
