Research Training at the National University of Laos (NUOL)

The first phase of the NUOL (National University of Laos) research-training project commenced with introductory research formulation sessions at the beginning of 2000. The project took 12 staff in four departments at NUOL through the research process, from formulating research questions, through designing a proposal, carrying out fieldwork to analysis and writing. Each of three teams designed a proposal in several stages and carried out fieldwork on aspects of local resource management and resource tenure, punctuated by training sessions run in Vientiane by AMRC director Phil Hirsch and colleagues at York University in Canada, Chiengmai University in Thailand and the East-West Centre in Hawaii. Research themes included the impacts of irrigation development on resource tenure and access; the implications of forest land allocation on food security; and links between forest land allocation and changing agricultural patterns. This phase concluded with an open policy workshop on the Land and Forest Allocation Program, held at NUOL in December 2002. The second phase of the project involves a research training component, research management capacity building and the establishment of an outreach centre on community-based natural resource management at NUOL.
